Time of Transition

2021-10-30

As gardeners turned farmers, the ancient celebrations that are part of the Wheel of the Year have an important role in our lives and our planning. While it's not religious for us, the celebrations nearly always have meaning to anyone who cares for the land. Samhain, which has evolved into Halloween and All Souls Day, is the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It's a celebration of all of the life and the bounty that the prior season has brought, and a time to reflect on life that has ended wi.

It's easy to see, as you watch your plants turn to dust, how this harvest period became a time to remember the people we love who have passed on and to celebrate the lives they lived. It's a doorway from one cycle of life to another. A time of transition.

For us this year, it's about remembering all we've achieved at Batshit Crazy Farms as we host our very last Market Day ever and to turn our thoughts to renewing our commitment to the ever expanding Edge of Liberty community.

We haven't even finished putting all of our planting areas to bed for the season, and we're already filling our shopping cart at Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds for next year while planning how we're going to plant out our market gardens using the GrowVeg garden planner. Granted, it's been raining all week so sitting at a computer and planning is about all we can do, even though we did take some time out to dig the last of the sweet potatoes out of some very heavy mud before the frost took them. We've also been pureeing and dehydrating hot peppers all week for a special Christmas edition of our famous hot pepper blend.

Thinking ahead to next year...would love to hear our community's feedback on produce you'd like to see us have available that you've not seen at our farm stands before...and certainly some feedback on things you absolutely loved and don't want us to ever stop growing.

Join the conversation in our Facebook group.

And don't forget to come see us one last time at Batshit Crazy Farms Market Day - The Series Finale - today from 9 to 5.
